Shireplitis meriadoci

Auckland-based Dr Darren Ward and his fellow researchers named newly discovered wasp species after characters in Tolkien’s books last year.

They have named them S. bilboi, S. frodoi, S. meriadoci, S. peregrini, and S. samwisei after the characters Bilbo, Frodo, Merry, Pippin and Sam. There’s now also a S. tolkieni named after J.R.R. Tolkien himself. They belong to the new genus (group of wasps), Shireplitis, which refers to The Shire – the region inhabited by Hobbits.

The wasps are said to be small, short and stout – like hobbits – and are only found in New Zealand.

Pretty cool! Dom himself also had a new species of spider named after him during the making of Wild Things season 1 – click HERE to find out more. #BeCurious
